Leys' Science Challenge 2001

Friends' School Saffron Walden found themselves through to the finals of The Leys' School Science Challenge on June 9th. This was after successfully taking part in the November heats of the Challenge involving 52 schools.
Rachel Bloomfield, Tom Dickinson, Myles Hancock and Alice Trowsdale, all Year 7 pupils, were accompanied by their teacher Julie Anderson.

The team of 4 took part in a series of 3 challenges involving aspects of Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as requiring skills of design and innovation.

The theme to all 3 challenges was "Copper" … this turned out to mean both copper as a metal and as another word for policeman.

The pupils worked tirelessly throughout the day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

"Although the team did not win any one of the three individual challenges, the consistent performance meant that when the overall winners were announced we had in fact achieved 2nd Place", said Julie Anderson.

" And we were very pleased to receive a special mention for the 'team spirit' shown by the Friends' School pupils throughout the activities."

The heats were in November
When days are short and nights are long
With Dr Mead, the trusty maestro
The 4 of us, we went along.
A science task we'd entered
So to the Leys school we did go
We'd find out there, by challenges
What science did we know.

The task was pure and simple
Build a rocket that would fly
With Myles on the design team
The Friend's one went sky high

We came away quite happy
Our rocket flew and how!!!
We'd have to wait for the results
"But I want to know, now"

Alice and Rachel went to York
They were travelling on the train
So Myles and Tom they phoned them up
"We're off to the Leys again"

So this time on a Saturday
We met up at 9.30
Good job there was some chocolate there
It made us feel quite perky

We were told the clue was in the hat
A copper's helmet,…. So
Our brains got working, all fired up
We were ready, steady, go

The first challenge was a bit of chemmy
Get copper from it's ore
We coped with that, and got our metal
That's what the hat was for

The second task was really cool
We had to shine a light
So that it lit the coppers hats
We managed that alright.

Back to the labs for task number 3
To make reactions speed
With catalysts and good old spuds
We had the things we'd need.

Our tasks were over, we had to wait
The judges now decide our fate.

We all had tea
Our Mums were there
They came along
To show they care

And so the winners were announced
First for each individual heat
We got a special mention
Our teamwork was a treat

And overall we got 2nd place
We jumped up and down with glee
We'd beaten 50 other schools
Rachel, Alice Tom and me

We all went up to get our prizes
T-Shirts, vouchers and a pen
We all shook hands
A great day out
"Please Miss, can we do it again?"
