French Exchange 2003 at Nimes

Our annual exchange visit to Nîmes,departing on the 19th March and returning on the 27th March, was yet again a great time and experience for all.

On our first day, we had a joint day trip and we were quickly acquainted with the local bulls with a visit of une Manade (a bull breeding farm visited on a tractor), and we saw a bull born at the time of our landing at Nîmes airport. We stopped en route to Montpellier to explore a local village and we were invited for lunch at a newly built secondary school, we ended the day with a visit of the town of Montpellier with its fun water fountains.

The following day was a day in the Camargue with a visit of the walled town of Aigues Mortes and the popular horse riding to admire the flamingoes of the Camargue, before our discovery of the Mediterranean sea resort of the Saintes Maries de la Mer. Another day trip was to see the Grottes des Demoiselles and we had a memorable visit of the Quaker house in a local village with many Quaker connections.

The sites of Nimes were visited in groups with students of the French school guiding us in English. We had another trip to the site of the Pont Du Gard and a visit of the Haribo sweets Museum and the National Studs in Uzès. There were many other visits with the French families, such as the Perrier factory, and most of all, all learnt to live the life of their partners with their French school and French family.

There were some breaks in communication, but all tried to improve their language; may be the French more than the English. All of us can reflect on the following words from Professor Mike Kelly :

"The total flaw is that English works effectively for us in one direction only, that is in transmit-mode. If you speak only English you can be sure that plenty of people out there will understand what you are saying. But in receive-mode, if you are only tuned in to English , you will only hear what others choose to let you know."

The hosting of the French party in May also went extremely well. I wish to thank everyone, the French teachers Mireille and Hélène, Gillian Herbert who accompanied this year and all parents and staff, French and English, for making this a memorable and enjoyable time for all.

En mars dernier j'ai fait un échange à Nîmes dans le sud de la France. Le mercredi soir on est parti de l'aéroport de Stansted. On a pris l'avion et le car en France. Pendant le voyage j'ai écouté mon baladeur et lu des magazines. J'ai fait bon voyage, mais c'était un peu long. On est arrivé à Nîmes à dix heures. J'ai rencontré ma correspondante, qui s'appelle Doriane, et sa mère. La famille était très sympa. On s'est promené à la maison de Doriane. Doriane habite sur la colline, dans le nord de la ville, la maison était un moderne villa et c'était très confortable.

Le premier jour, nous sommes allés en Camargue. Il y avait des taureaux, que nous avons regardé. Les taureaux étaient très grands et un peu formidable. Ensuite, on a fait des excursions en car à des petites villes. L'après-midi on a visité Montpellier, où on a fait du shopping, c'était une belle ville et il a fait beau. Il faisait très chaud par contre en Angleterre. Le soir, je me suis douché et on a mangé le repas, c'était du riz, des œufs et des épinards parce que je suis végétarienne. C'était très bon. Ensuite, je suis allée dans ma chambre, C'était au rez-de chaussé en face du séjour.

Le vendredi, nous sommes allés au centre de Nîmes avec la classe français. On a regardé les jardins de la fontaine, c'était très beau et vraiment vieux. Nîmes est une ville romaine. La visite était assez bien.

J'ai rencontré mes amis anglais, le samedi. On a mangé un pique-nique, ensuite on a joué au foot avec les français et on a gagné - le score était 7-4.

Le dimanche, je suis allée aux St. Maries de-la-mer avec ma correspondante, il faisait beau et chaud. Je suis allée dans la mer, elle était assez calme mais très froide. Ce jour était bien.

Le lundi, je suis allée avec Mme Searle-Barnes et les correspondants anglais en Camargue. Dans la Camargue il y a des taureaux, des chevaux et des flamands roses, les chevaux sont blancs et très beaux. Je les ai aimés. On est allé monter à cheval dans le mer dans la Camargue.

Je me suis bien entendue avec ma correspondante. J'ai pensé qu'elle était très sympa, gentille et vraiment généreuse. Doriane a aussi une famille très sympa. Je les ai aimés.

On est parti de l'aéroport de Nîmes à 22heures. Là, on a dit au revoir, c'était très triste parce qu'on a passé neuf jours avec eux. J'ai pensé que l'échange était super et on s'est bien amusé. Je n'ai pas pensé que je ne voulais pas faire l'échange avant d'aller en France. J'ai beaucoup aimé la France et je vais en France pendant les vacances.
