.... to the Lake District September
2004

17 Year 10 Geographers accompanied by Alison Ainsworth
and Guy Martin travelled to Blencathra near Keswick in the Lake
District to spend time practising the enquiry skills necessary for
GCSE geography
Day 1 Travel by coach and orientation meeting
Study of a lake district river valley-the weather was too wet to
take photos and proved a useful exercise for testing our waterproofs
and rucsac liners
Day 2
Climbing Catbells (450metres) to study the effects of footpath erosion
and the management of the area by the National trust. The weather
was mostly fine but there were strong winds at the top!
Day 3, morning
The study of Grasmere, a honeypot village in the National park.
The pupils completed a land use survey, visitor survey and environmental
quality assessment.
Day 3, afternoon
A study of the River Greta flood defences in Keswick
The weather during our stay was typical of the Lake District - damp,
with a low cloud ceiling, and drizzle almost always somewhere about,
nevertheless we all enjoyed it very much and the pupils learnt a
lot. We all appreciated the beauty of the National park, far removed
from the flat expanses of East Anglia.
