Rekawa School is in the town of Netolpitiya in Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist co-educational school covering the age range from five to eighteen years, with 276 students and 18 staff. The Principal is Mrs. Malinie. Through the agency 'Adopt Sri Lanka' we have undertaken to sponsor Rekawa School for £500 per term for a minimum of two years, following the Tsunami disaster on 26th December 2004.

An email of 1 March 06 from our field officer in Sri Lanka:

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Samanthi. I am the field officer working with your twin school Rekawa. Jo a volunteer from the UK and I were invited to the school sports meet. While we were there we took lots of photographs. I have put them on a CD and will send them to you this week with a copy of this letter and some work that Rekawa have prepared for you.

(See some of these photographs below.)

Traditionally the school is spilt into 3 houses, red, green and blue. The day before the students build houses out of natural materials found nearby. The students race for their houses and there is also a competition for the best built house.

There were some special events for the children and the teachers. There was fancy dress for some of the children. The children acted different roles. One girl pretended to be a Doctor and treated some patients. There was an old woman, a couple of crazy people and an upside down person. You can see all these roles on the photographs.

There was musical chairs for the teachers and Principal. It was really fun for all the pupils and spectators to watch. The last event was a Drill performance by the girls.

I am going to Matera tomorrow and will be ordering 5 steel cupboards at 7500rps each and 5 library cupboards at 8500rps each. Total spend 80’000rps/457GBP. Thank you once again for your kind donation. Rekawa School very much appreciate your help.

I hope that you enjoy looking at the photos and will be able to use them to inform your students. Rekawa School are very enthusiastic about the TWINS project and would very much like to receive information from your students about England, your school and area. I would also love to hear about any fundraising events you have done or are doing. I think it is important that the Sri Lankan children understand and appreciate the hard work that is done by pupils and staff to raise money for them in the UK.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Very best regards,

Samanthi
