Individual Needs

At Friends’ Junior School we aim to realise your child’s potential in all that he or she does. They may need a personalised level of support above that appropriate for others - perhaps because of a particular gift or talent, or a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia. At Friends’ Junior School we aim to identify those needs and provide a differentiated curriculum to ensure your child meets his or her potential. Children with talent are identified and programmes designed to ensure that they are stretched within class.

Additional classes may be offered such as extension maths lessons with the Head. Some children need additional support to help them develop skills and strategies to become independent learners. Your child may benefit from one-to-one teaching, or small group support, which may be provided by our Learning Support Teacher or from one of our dedicated and experienced teaching assistants. Their work is planned to complement and support the work of teachers in the classroom.

Your child may benefit from a touch typing club to encourage speedy recording, ‘fitness fun’ sessions to develop motor control or the opportunity to join a social skills group to help them to practise effective communication. If your child has an identified need before joining the school, information is gathered from you and your child before a programme is agreed. Educational psychologists and other specialists are involved when necessary and their advice is shared with all relevant staff
