The
Spring Celebration March 2004
The Early Years and Infant Department thoroughly enjoyed performing
the musical Wormzzz. It was great fun waltzing and rapping
at the same time as learning about worms. Such was the success of
the show that we also performed it to the delight of the Senior
School.

Inter-schools Cross
Country Friday 5th March

This was our second year at organising a cross-country
event and our numbers had grown to seventy-two children with nine
schools competing. The weather was perfect for running damp, drizzly
and not too cold. The runners all did exceptionally well with successes
in all age groups. Libby Whitfield did particularly well, our youngest
runner and first girl home in the Under 9s. A big thank you to all
those who took part and supported us.

The Light Fantastic - visit of
the Kinetic Theatre Company January 2004
Where has all the colour gone? The problem is black and white:
something or someone is stealing the colours of the world! The sky
is white, trees are black and the rivers are a murky grey.
Lost on the banks of the Ohio, County and Western singer Roy Gee
stumbles upon the Light Fantastic café - the last remaining
place to have any colour. In a desperate bid to save the precious
colours, he and café owner, Dolly, set to work.
Using trays for mirrors, ice-cubes for prisms and saucers for lenses,
they gradually unfold a major inter-planetary crisis - and only
our own solar system can shed light on the problem.
Such was the drama performed by the Kinetic Theatre Company last
week at Friends' Junior School. The pupils were involved in the
action as they tried to discover which character was an alien in
disguise, trying to steal the Earth's colours.
After the performance the actors undertook a Q&A session with
the children.
"It was a very enjoyable show," said Sally Knight, Deputy
Head of Friends' Junior School, "This Company aims to make
learning about science accessible and fun, and they certainly succeeded.
Our pupils loved it"

Summer 2003
'Another good crop of exam results reflecting personal achievement'.
With a 98.4% pass rate at A level nearly everyone has managed to
get into the university of their first choice. Over half the A level
grades were A or B grades. Well done.
At GCSE our pupils achieved a 100% pass rate with 70.6% achieving
5 or more A* to C grades, and 73.6% of the grades obtained overall
were A* to C grades. In nearly all cases these pupils exceeded predictions.
Well done.

Scary Viking Visitors!

"Scary!" was how Stuart Hall, Year 3, described Thorulf
Hammrsson and his wife, Gudrid, who visited Years 2, 3 and 4 at
Friends' Junior School this week
They brought in artefacts to show to the children and gave them
various talks on where the Vikings came from, and aspects of Viking
life.
In the morning session Thorulf demonstrated how to make chain mail
and coins and
in the afternoon he spoke about how the fierce Vikings waged war
and showed them his weapons of war - swinging his axe in a figure
of eight and narrowly missing the lights. He also told them the
gory details of what they did with captives from a battle.
Edward Parry, Year 3 said, "My favourite part was where we
were learning how to party like Vikings"
Ben Kaye, also Year 3 said "My favourite part was when Thorulf
cut a melon in half with his sword."
