Introduction to the Library
Our aim is to support every aspect of school life including the social, cultural, educational and emotional needs of our pupils. Research has shown that collaboration between library staff and teachers has a positive impact on achievement. It is also a safe place full of stories, poetry, imagination and dreams.
There are currently 7600 books items in the library most of which are borrowable. Our collection includes Quaker information, 3 daily newspapers, periodicals and magazines, quick reads and short stories, graphic novels, CDs and DVDs. We also have university prospectuses and careers information, and a ‘reading for pleasure area’.
We have 8 Internet-linked computers and sixth formers have priority use of these during lesson time.
Pupils are encouraged to recommend books for the library to purchase.
Anyone who would like to become a library volunteer can sign up to help out in the library at lunchtime and learn some new skills. Each year in March we celebrate World Book Day and during the Summer term we take part in Carnegie Shadowing.

Using the Library
Everyone is welcome in the library.
Books can be borrowed for two weeks. Years 7, 8 and 9 can borrow 4 items, 6 items for Years 10 and 11, and 10 items for Sixth Formers.
If the librarian is not around then please record any loans taken on the sheet. Books borrowed should be returned or renewed on time. Returned books can be placed on the librarians’ desk outside hours and books can be renewed by email if nobody else requires them.
Please look after the library by:
Eating and drinking outside the Library
Handling resources with care
Working and reading quietly
Not using mobile phones
Keeping the library in good order – all books have a unique place on the shelves. If you do not know where to reshelve a book please return it to the Librarian.
Dewey and the Library Catalogue
We use the Dewey Decimal Classification system for arranging books in the library. Each book is given a Dewey or class number which can be found on the spine of the book along with the first three letters of the author’s surname. Books are arranged in order by number as follows:
