AS/A Level DT Product Design

Graphic Products with Materials Technology (Edexcel)

This subject is a progression from the Design and Technology offered at GCSE and allows you to develop your design skills in both the technical and graphical fields. It is recommended that you to have followed the previous course before but it is also expected that you will have an active interest in art / design / graphics.
We will be following the new syllabus and its aim is to introduce you to a new range of graphical and technical skills, based on the design process. We consider how graphics can be used to explore a wide variety of problems, from packaging to complete product design. A unit of the course is related to project work, where you will be able to choose your own problem and use your own creativity to develop an answer. The aim is for you to show a range of techniques and to consider how best to communicate your ideas.
The course will be linked to the commercial world of Product Design. The emphasis will be on how graphics and materials affect the design of a product and form its initial concepts through to a scale model and to production.
The course will be split into four units and you will be able to achieve an AS level in the first year and a full A Level by the end of the second. There are two units in the first year, followed by a further two in the second.
