Carnegie shadowing.
For the last four years, the English department and the Library
jointly run a Carnegie reading group for Years 7-9 in the summer
term. The group meets once a week at lunchtime to read and discuss
the short-listed books. We then have an extended voting session
and reach a decision on the book we would like to win the prize.
Combined with this, we also look at the Kate Greenaway short listed
books and discuss them in an extended session with Year 6 pupils
from the Junior department before voting.

Readathon / Book week
Years 7-9 participate in this sponsored event during the summer
term. Activities to celebrate book week are also organised. A visiting
poet or author works with the children in school.

'Poetry Live'
Each year pupils in year 11 visit Cambridge to listen to poets
such as Simon Armitage, Gillian Clarke and John Agard who recite
and speak about their work. This is a wonderful opportunity to ask
questions about the poetry studied in the anthology at GCSE.
Theatre visits
During the academic Year 2003/2004, visits were organised to 'Romeo
and Juliet', 'His Dark Materials' and 'Othello'. We liaise closely
with the Drama Department and support their productions.
