Poetry Now Young Writers' was established
in 1991 to encourage the reading and writing of poetry by young people.
Young Writers' books nuture interest
and confidence by giving young people the opportunity to see their work
in print in a series of reading anthologies.
These books represent a generation of
voices having their say on a whole range of themes from home and school
to the environment and world politics.
I Am by Rachel Daniel
I used to think about
Dolls, and flowers
And visiting the park,
When I was younger.
Nothing to worry about.
Nothing to fear.
Never intimidated
Innocent confidence.
Now I am older.
I worry a lot
About school, about boys
About friends about me.
Happiness isn't always my state of mind.
Darker thoughts sometimes lurk in my head.
Decisions are more important than before,
Mistakes are not as easy to forgive.
It's hard.

I Am by Aaron Titmus
It's 6.45 in the morning
Time to rise
Bus leaves in less than 1 hour
Must be organised.
The journey to school
Takes 60 minutes
Look out the window
Read books and things.
School is good fun
Friends a good bunch
Warm welcome, kind faces
Good teachers, great lunch.
English, there's poems,
Maths, there's sums,
French, there's vocab,
Music there's drums.
I'm tallest by far
At six foot two
My feet are enormous
A size 12 shoe.
My best things in life
My dog, the country,
Fishing, Air Cadets
And the D of E.
In the future I wonder
What I shall be
But for now I'll settle for home
And a nice cup of tea.

In My Head by James Cameron
In my head,
I am never alone,
I have the best company,
I could ever have.
In my head,
War doesn't exist,
There is no death,
Or suffering.
In my head,
I am nothing like,
What I seem to be,
On the outside.
In my head,
I am never different,
'Cause there is no-one
Else to be different from.
In my head,
I can be whom I want,
Quiet, loud, tall, small,
Who's going to stop me?
In my head,
There is no prison,
But, then, sometimes the mind,
Is the smallest prison of all.

I Am by Melissa Pearce
I am me,
Dark and unwanted when unhappy
Yet colourful and understanding when amused.
Happiness is my life, it is a big part of me.
It makes me strong, it makes me feel good.
I start the day off dull with my moods,
Grumpy and underconfident.
I feel very particular about what I think and
What people think of me.
People say I was a cat in a different life, stubborn
When I want and playful when I want.
I think I'm just me.

I Am by Kathrine Castle
I am a person in my own right
I am a girl who is a teenager
Who likes a messy room.
I am a person in my own right
I am a person who has a special
Intellect in the areas of
Art, Drama and Music.
I am a person in my own right
Who has feelings too!
I am who I am and what I am is a
Human being.
I am a human being
Who is a teenager who loves
Her boyfriend.
I am a person who has a boyfriend
My comfort is chocolate
I am not perfect nor is anyone else
So why should they judge me
By how I look.

I Am by Heather Sills
I am a strange sort of person in my
Own unique way
For if I could travel back in time
I would be a medieval Queen,
Dressed in long flowing gowns
I would ride alongside Robin Hood.
Fight with swords and arrows,
In great battles with William Wallace.
I would like to live in a quiet castle far away.
I would like to be Elizabeth Bennet
From Pride and Prejudice.
For she was a great character
Strong minded and not afraid
To stand up for what she believed in.
I would like to marry Mr. Darcy and
Live at Pemberly.
Things like that only happen in the dreams
Of teenage girls,
When we are fast asleep in a world of
Our own.

What am I? by Leah Thompson
I feel small when people intimidate me,
I sit and hide my feelings,
I am always worrying about the future,
I am cheerful and confident most of the time,
Sad and small when someone offends me,
But I'm just a person,
Like everyone else on the outside,
And very different inside.
