2007 District Cross Country Championships - Wednesday 31st October 2007

Friends’ School sent a 55 strong cross country team to the district competition this year. In the last few years Friends’ have performed extremely well considering we are competing against much larger schools. A team consists of 8 runners with the top six places counting towards the team event total. The year 7 girls had outstanding individual results with Imogen Candler being placed 2nd, Cordelia Kiddy 3rd, Pandora Kiddy 4th and Libby Whitfield 10th. Combined with Annie Scholfield and Poppy Greenwood’s placings of 17th and 18th respectively they were district champions. The year 8 girls also performed exceptionally with Becky Westerhuis 5th, Jess Mazdon Binns 6th, Elizabeth Cooke 9th, Elle Casey 10th, Jocelyn Jarman 11th and Poppy Stanbury 17th. They too were named district champions for the second year running. Alice Irwin and Polly Johnson ran fantastic races in the year 10/11 group and were placed 3rd and 4th overall. Brilliant results by our girls.

The boys also had some pleasing results with the year 8 boys being placed 2nd in the teams event. James Cochrane was placed 2nd, Ben Kaye 9th and Jed Hunter 19th. The year 10/11 boys were placed 3rd overall which was particularly pleasing seeing that our team consisted of 6 year 10’s. Jack Richardson was placed 7th whilst Ben Brown ran well for 15th. The year 7 and 9 teams were placed 10th overall.

Well done runners, Jenny Allwood and myself would like to praise you for your commitment and effort leading up to and on the day.

Nick Batcheler

Sixth Form 'Preparing for Peace' Conference at Leighton Park School on 26th September 2007

Over 200 sixth form students were present including the whole of our sixth form and students from 4 other Quaker schools - Leighton Park, Sidcot, Sibford and Ackworth. This proved to be a thought provoking occasion where we were able to explore alternatives to war through talks and workshops using the Vietnam War and the Rwandan Genocide as examples. This was part of our Quaker Schools’ Week.

2007 Science Department Gardening Competition

Monday saw the culmination of this project that has kept pupils, parents and adult members of the Friends’ School community busy since March. Judges Tony Watson, Graham Wigley, Matthew Wright and Vivian Stansfield deliberated for over an hour to select prize winners in 12 different classes. The standard of entries was so high that several runners up were also awarded prizes. Prizes included bird boxes, bird feeders and indoor flower kits. The display of produce was enjoyed by many on Monday, and winning entries were displayed during the prize giving at Tuesday’s assembly. We look forward to making this an annual event, and thank everyone who supported it. Science Team
