Learning Support at Friends’ School

‘Rejoice in the presence of children and young people …and recognise the gifts they bring…Are you ready both to learn from them and to accept your responsibilities towards them?’ Quaker Faith & Practice

Heather Carter - Head of Learning Support - heathercarter@friends.org.uk

Your child may need a personalised level of support above that appropriate for others – perhaps because of a particular gift or talent, a sensory impairment or a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia. We have a number of places available throughout the school.

The Study Centre aims to develop strategies to improve an individual’s study, organisation and thinking skills. Study Centre staff aim to complement and support the work of teachers in the classroom. Your child may benefit from one-to-one teaching, or support within the classroom from qualified learning support assistants; both are designed to ensure equal access to the curriculum.

If your child has an identified need before joining the school, information is gathered from you and your child before a programme is agreed. Educational psychologists and other specialists are involved when necessary and their advice – perhaps for a reduced number of GCSEs or for additional time in examinations – is shared with relevant staff.

Close liaison between departments throughout your child’s time at the school allows any problems that may arise to be quickly identified and passed on for further action if necessary.

The Study Centre will monitor your child’s progress closely and modify support where appropriate. You are encouraged to maintain regular contact with the Study Centre staff throughout the year.

The cost of support will depend on your child’s needs. Additional costs will be kept to a minimum and will be discussed during the application process.

The Study Centre

The main centre has two teaching rooms, a computer/study room and an office area. Most of the computers are linked to the RM network and there are printing, internet and scanning facilities, as well as a wide range of specialist software programmes.

The Study Centre Annexe has two teaching rooms and a study area again with RM network computing facilities.
