Bursaries and Scholarships
No child who would benefit from the education that Friends’ School provides should be discouraged from applying solely on the grounds of financial need.
Friends’ School is committed to broadening access to the School by offering means-tested financial support as bursaries towards meeting the cost of school fees. Bursaries up to 100% of fees are available depending on parents’ financial circumstances. Parents seeking financial support should in the first instance contact the Bursar to request the necessary forms.
The completed forms, together with other documentary evidence requested, are to be submitted to the Bursar for consideration no later than the date of the Entrance Examination in any year for a pupil wishing to take up a place in the following September.
Quaker Bursaries
In common with the six other Quaker schools in this country, we encourage Quaker Families to send their children to a Quaker School. Parents contribute according to an assessment of their financial resources and the scheme is also supported by the Religious Society of Friends and the School. Friends are asked to contact the Bursar for further information.
Scholarships
The school is able to offer a number of Scholarships, at both 11+, 13+ and at Sixth Form level, to pupils based on academic merit. Scholarships are also available to those who demonstrate excellence in Music, Art, Drama or Sport.
Year 7 (11+)
Scholarships up to a maximum of 50% of the day fee may be awarded on the grounds of Academic Excellence following Entrance Tests, one specifically for a child from Friends’ Junior School.
Four scholarships of £500 per term will be awarded to Year 7 pupils who demonstrate particular abilities in the fields of Art, Music, Drama and Sport.
• Requirements for the Art Scholarship will be a submission of course work, a letter of recommendation from the candidate’s art teacher, an examination, and an interview.
• The standard expected for the Music Scholarship is a minimum of Grade 3 in the chosen instrument, with some ability expected on piano (if this is not the chosen instrument). Candidates will be expected to perform on the instrument and there will also be aural tests and an interview. Instrumental tuition will also be provided free of charge on the successful candidate’s main instrument.
• Candidates for the Sports Scholarship must be able to show sports competency in a number of activities with particular interest in a team game. Assessment will be by practical interviews and references from the candidate’s present school. The award holder will be expected to be available for all school teams.
• The Drama Scholarship will be awarded to the pupil who demonstrates a passion and understanding for the subject. The award holder will be expected to be available for all relevant drama productions and become a member of the Drama Club.
Year 9 (13+)
Scholarships up to a maximum of 50% of the day fee may be awarded on the grounds of Academic Excellence to a child joining the School in Year 9.
Four scholarships of £500 a term will be awarded to external applicants joining the School or to existing Year 8 pupils moving into Year 9. These are for children who show particular abilities in the fields of Music, Sport, Drama and Art.
• Candidates are expected to have reached at least Grade 4 in their chosen instrument for the Music Scholarship, and to have contributed regularly to a choir or music group. Instrumental tuition will also be provided free of charge on the successful candidate’s main instrument.
• The Sports Scholarship is awarded to a child showing all-round sporting ability and regular contributions to a sports team. The award holder will be expected to be available for all School teams.
• Those applying for the Art Scholarship will need to demonstrate a portfolio of work and have a reference from their Art teacher indicating outstanding ability.
• The Drama Scholarship will be awarded to the pupil who demonstrates a passion and understanding for the subject. They should have a broad outlook on the subject and have an interest in a number of theatrical genres. The award holder will be expected to be available for all relevant drama productions and become a member of the Drama Club.
